Blepharitis

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common and often chronic condition where the eyelids become inflamed. It typically affects the edges of the eyelids, leading to symptoms that can be both uncomfortable and persistent. This inflammation is a significant contributor to dry eye syndrome, a condition where the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to irritation and discomfort.

Blepharitis and dry eye syndrome are closely linked. In fact, studies suggest that up to 50% of people with dry eye also have blepharitis. When the eyelids are inflamed, the glands that produce the oily layer of the tear film do not function properly, leading to increased tear evaporation. This exacerbates dry eye symptoms, creating a cycle where blepharitis worsens dry eye, and the resulting dry eyes further irritate the eyelids.
