What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a chronic eye condition that affects up to 50% of the adult population. It is an inflammation of the eyelid/eyelashes, usually at the base of the eyelashes, leading to burning sensations, flaking and crusting around the eyelids, irritation, itching and redness of the eyes and eyelid margins and foreign body sensations.
Not sure if you have blepharitis? We have come across many patients who have been diagnosed with blepharitis, either by their GP or Optician. Unfortunately, they have not been told how to manage the condition appropriately.
We specialise in the management and treatment of Blepharitis.
What is Blephex™?
The most advanced development in the field, BlephEx is a painless procedure performed in-practice by our optometrists. A patented hand piece is used to very precisely and carefully, spin a medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids.
Like a scale and polish of your teeth, the BlephEx treatment will help to clear the problematic detritus from your eyelids, but cannot prevent it from reforming. Works best followed by a cleaning routine that we will recommend and follow-up appointments to monitor progress.
What is Blephasteam®?
If you suffer from Blepharitis or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and currently use a warm flannel or heated wheat bag for relief, then you might be interested in the Blephasteam goggles.
These goggles plug-in and provide a consistent 10 minutes of warm heat to the eyelids, with no hassle of needing reheating during the time. The goggles fit to your head and have clear lenses, allowing you to sit upright and watch television or read during the treatment as well.

EyeLid Hygiene Products
For day to day relief from the condition some people still recommend baby shampoo – the NHS advise against this, as the shampoo will break down the natural oils in the eyelashes and leave the skin unprotected and more prone to inflammation.
We carry a range of dedicated wipes and solutions which are designed specifically to tackle blepharitis and provide longer lasting relief. Our practice team are happy to advise, call in for more information.
